about mitimiti 

Mitimiti is a small coastal mostly Maori community comprising of approx 100 people or 30 families belonging to the Te Rarawa tribe. 

Life is based around the beach and the tide, forestry, farming and tourism.  

Mitimiti once boasted a gum store, accommodation house, Post Office and shop when past industry included flax milling in the 1870's also kauri logging and the bleeding of kauri for its gum then later dairy, sheep and beef farming and forestry. 

The Matihetihe School celebrated its centenary in 1990. Ralph Hotere, one of New Zealands most significant contemporary artists was born in Taikarawa at Mitimiti in 1931 and was educated at Matihetihe School.

Some 25 ships were wrecked at the Hokianga and Whangape Harbours. Part of the Joseph Craig, wrecked in 1914 is sometimes visible on the beach at the North Head Sand Dunes.
